Billboards and Hoardings

Billboards and hoardings are two interchangeable terms used for large outdoor advertising boards usually seen in areas with high traffic, for instances on busy roads. They are used to advertise products or services to pedestrians and drivers.
Billboards are designed to be visible at large distances and to attract attention. They have a very short time to achieve this because the reader will be passing by at very high speeds. Also, since billboards and hoardings are located at some distance and height, visibility is a top concern. To achieve this, billboard designers make use of bold and eye-catching colors to create large and prominent visuals which are accompanied by witty and eye-catching one-line slogans in large fonts, using bright colors which provide high contrast with the background colors.
Billboards have traditionally been nothing more than words and pictures painted on a piece of canvas. However, as more and more organizations have come to realize how effective billboard advertising can be, this trend is beginning to change. Increasingly creative techniques are being used to make the designs stand out from the crowd and gain attention, providing maximum visibility. Some billboard designers make use of three-dimensional figures in order to catch the eye. Others use a motor to change the displayed advertisement after a pre-defined interval in order to display multiple advertisements on the same location, saving costs and attracting attention at the same time. Still others use motors to create movement designed to catch the eye and make the viewer take notice.
