Leading Search Engine competing with PowerPoint

A leading search engine is including a feature in its Documents and Spreadsheets software that brings it into direct competition with Microsoft’s PowerPoint.
The new feature was demonstrated during a recent exhibition and allows users to create presentations and slide shows over the Internet using software hosted on the Web. While no specific timeline has been announced for official launch, it is expected that the feature would soon be available on the search engine’s server.
This feature is part of the search engine’s move towards collaborative software, which allows multiple users with an Internet connection to work on documents together regardless of location. Yet, despite the similarities with Microsoft PowerPoint, the CEO of the search engine was adamant that the new functionality of the Documents and Spreadsheets software was not trying to compete with the established presentation software. “It only includes a subset of the features in the well-established suite and the limitations of the Web-based interface will never have the full functionality of the Microsoft Office suite”, said the CEO in a recent press conference.
The search engine has been introducing more productivity software and distributing them as free services available online. Its email and contact management system was launched three years ago, and last year its Documents and Spreadsheet services were merged with the email software. Despite its claims that it is not competing with Microsoft, industry leaders maintain otherwise. By offering free versions of Microsoft’s productivity software online as well as adding collaboration features, the search engine is directly hitting Microsoft’s major product. What is left to be seen is how Microsoft reacts to this move.
